You might not necessarily play the 12 bar blues in the key of D in this position, as it sounds quite 'bright', the usual way would actually be from string 5 fret 5.
It's a good variation to practice though, as it forces you to think when moving across to fret number three, string 2.
But remember, it's what sounds 'right' with whom you're jamming with.
